Practical Home Tips: Is your repairman tricking you?
Maintenance and repair work for your home appliances can be as expensive as the machines themselves. Not only do you have to deal with costly parts needed for the repairs, but you also have to worry about the service fee of your repairmen! Is your repairman tricking you?
Unfortunately, many maintenance specialists trick their customers into paying more than what they should have. You may encounter one–or even worse– your current repairman may be tricking you now!
But how do you know if your repairman is tricking you? How can you avoid getting into such a problem? In this blog, we’ll give you some hints to tell if your repairman is cheating you and how to solve the situation correctly.
- He’s starting really, really cheap.
Here’s the truth–repair works that are way too cheap are just marketing ploys. If you want to get satisfactory services, then you have to prepare your wallet.
The thing with cheap service providers is that they’re just using their affordable price tags to attract first-time customers. When you hire them and start doing their work, they will flood you with additional charges that you can no longer escape. They will package these additional charges as “essential steps” in repairing your appliance.
In short, no additional charge, no repaired item! is your repairman tricking you?
If you opted for the cheapest repair services, chances are, you will spend more than what you should have if you opted for the pricier ones. So don’t hesitate to go with repair service providers that may have higher price tags but have equally high reputations.
- He’s switching from one diagnosis to another.
If your repairman continuously contradicts his diagnosis, then there’s a high chance that you’re being tricked.
Sure enough, it’s their job to know the other glitches or issues on your unit that may cause problems later on. But if he’s saying issues that are already too far from the original trouble you hired him for, his goal might not be to fix your unit but to look for more problems that will force you to call him back.
How can you possibly solve this? Be very nitpicky with the details. Show him that you want to know everything about his work. This way, you will quickly catch him on his tongue should he be making things up.
This problem is common among freelance and individual workers. Maintenance specialists affiliated with a company will need additional paperwork to do more work for you. That will be tougher to manipulate compared to if he’s working for himself.
- He’s measuring you– your knowledge and your pocket.
If he’s doing more talk and less work, then that is an ultimate red flag. Chances are, he’s trying to get to know you and your pockets.
His questions will start with simple inquiries like “Do you know this kind of bolt?” or “Have you seen this kind of electric parts?”. If he sees that you’re entirely clueless about what he’s doing, then your wallet is in danger.
Don’t play dumb! Always say that you’ve seen or encountered the things that he’s saying. If he’s telling the truth, he will explain things to you gracefully. But if he’s not, he will know that he would have to try harder to trick you.
- He wants so much, but has so little.
If your repairman is asking for additional charges for the smallest and simplest of bolts, screws, and minor tools, then he might not be a legitimate repairman after all.
One of the marks of an experienced repairman is his set of tools. If he’s invested in his work, he will see to it to improve his tools to give more satisfactory service. If maintenance specialists are warriors, their tools are their weapons.
But if you hired a warrior that will make you pay for even the shortest knife, then prepare to lose the battle by losing your appliance or your money. Yikes!
Again, this kind of scheme is common among individual maintenance specialists, as those affiliated with legitimate maintenance providers would need to file requests for additional tools and items needed for your repair.
- He KNOWS you will call back.
If he ends with a note that implies he’s going to see you soon because of his repair, there’s a big chance that your maintenance worker delivered a half-hearted service so that he can get compensated again. He may be dividing his work into chunks to make you shed more money.
Don’t call him back! Immediately assess the situation. If your appliance reencounters an issue, go with a reputable repair services provider.
Repair companies may charge more, but you can be sure that their goal is to repair your item and never return it. This way, they can work on their other clients. Furthermore, they wouldn’t sacrifice their reputation just for another day of work for an individual client like you. Chances are, they’re providing services for more prominent companies!
